At Christmas we used to go to midnight mass on Christmas eve. We would need to get there early in order to get a pew to ourselves. Often there were so many in attendance that we would be split up. The service started with a half hour of carols. After mass we would go home, drink egg nog and have some of my mother’s trifle, which was delicious , and contained rum. Then we would open one present before going to bed. It’s a tradition I loved, and continued with our children. Now that our children have grown and moved away, we are not all together as Often. I miss those days long ago.
