Sylvia Arditi and Marc Lachièze-Rey, in Cosmos, discuss Immanuel Kant's hypothesis of 'island universes.' Kant, writing in the late 18th century, suggested that "matter may be distributed in the cosmos like islands in an archipelago emerging from a dark sea." In recent years astronomers have identified millions of galaxies and presume that there are even billions of galaxies, billions of archipelagos emerging from the Cosmos. Our own gigantic Milky Way is just one of perhaps many millions of galaxies. Its beauty is awe-inspiring.
