**Bascule**
*Acrylic on canvas, 10” x 20”*
The painting **Bascule** is a tribute to the former bascule bridge on the LaSalle Causeway in Kingston, Ontario—now lost to time. For decades, this bridge was not just a passage but a part of the city's rhythm, a familiar presence woven into the daily lives of those who crossed it.
In the painting, the bridge stands tall one last time, its weathered steel trusses silhouetted against the sky. The textured brushstrokes evoke the hum of tires rolling over its metal grid, a sound deeply imprinted in memory. A faint glow of streetlights reflects off the structure, suggesting the bridge’s enduring presence in the mind, even as it fades from reality.
The composition captures both nostalgia and inevitability. The very mechanism that once lifted gracefully to allow boats through—the bascule—now symbolizes a different kind of transition. As with so many pieces of our past, the bridge's quiet disappearance mirrors the way life gradually shifts, taking with it the familiar sounds, sights, and moments that once seemed permanent.
With **Bascule**, I honor a piece of my childhood, the journeys with my father, the excitement of the ringing bell, and the sight of the bridge rising—a moment of wonder now preserved only in memory and paint.
