My latest painting, “Fishing”, is an 8” x 10” acrylic on canvas inspired by some very warm memories of very cold days. ❄️
I can still picture walking out onto the ice as a kid and seeing it dotted with huts and fishermen — it felt like the whole world had gathered there. There seemed to be so many more people out on the lake back then. Today, you’ll still find ice fishing north of Kingston on lakes such as Lobourough , but I don’t get up that way as often as I used to. Running the store keeps me happily busy, yet those quiet northern lakes still call to me.
Some of my favourite memories are the winter fun days organized by St Joseph’s Church parish. Everyone would be invited out to a lake north of Kingston for a day of fresh air and fun. There was hot chocolate, hot dogs, plenty of treats, laughter echoing across the ice, and of course people ice fishing in every direction.
Great memories. Great fun. And in this little 8 x 10 painting, I tried to capture not just the scene — but the feeling of warmth despite the cold, and the simple joy of being out there on a frozen lake.
