The Hitchhiker
Acrylic on canvas
10” x 20”
The Hitchhiker is a nostalgic winter scene depicting a young child pulling a toboggan through fresh snow. Riding along is a small snowman—his newest companion—carefully perched as if catching a lift home after a long afternoon outdoors.
The painting draws on memories of those first heavy snowfalls of the season, when children would rush outside and claim the neighbourhood hills. There is a sense of independence in the child’s steady pull, bundled against the cold, boots pressing determinedly into the snow. The little snowman, slightly lopsided and full of personality, represents the fleeting magic of childhood friendships—built quickly, cherished fully, and destined to melt away.
Rather than focusing on the rush downhill, this piece captures the quieter moment at day’s end: the long walk back, cheeks flushed, mittens damp, and legs tired from hours of climbing and sliding. The narrow 10” x 20” format emphasizes the forward movement through the winter landscape, while the emotional tone centres on warmth within the cold—a simple, tender story of imagination, companionship, and the satisfaction that comes after a full day in the snow.
